SRAM brakes: disc brakes, brake sets & technology

When you ride sportively, whether that is on the mountain bike, gravel bike, road bike or triathlon bike, your brakes are one of the most important parts of your entire equipment. Good brakes do not just ensure that you stop in time; they give you the control, confidence and precision to race through corners faster and more effectively and steer controlled through descents. SRAM has been one of the biggest brands in this field for years, with many series for every cycling discipline that can perfectly match your bike.

Why good brakes make the difference

Brakes are an important part, whether you enter a technical descent on the mountain bike, race over the asphalt at high speed on the road bike, or navigate over unpaved roads with the gravel bike. Good brakes ensure a more direct responsiveness and constant braking performance under all conditions. The right brakes do not just deliver the necessary stopping power, but also the modulation that is needed to keep riding faster with full confidence and control. As soon as a braking system feels spongy or does not grab directly, you do not only throw away precious speed by having to brake too early, but you also directly compromise your safety.

The SRAM braking system explained

Hydraulic brakes are often the standard nowadays, where the technical difference between road, gravel and MTB mainly lies in the number of pistons and the mounting method. For asphalt, gravel and Cross-Country, SRAM focuses on minimal air resistance and weight saving. Here, compact 2-piston brake calipers with a streamlined Flat Mount attachment are often used. Combined with Paceline brake rotors designed for quiet operation and effective heat dissipation, this yields direct and light braking performance at high speed.

When the terrain gets rougher on the mountain bike, a Post Mount attachment is often used and the terrain asks for significantly more stopping power. Trail and enduro MTB riders therefore often use 4-piston systems, such as the DB6 and Code series. This double set of pistons divides the pressure over a larger surface for maximum heat resistance in steep descents, especially in combination with robust rotors such as the Centerline brake rotors. Also pay attention to the attachment of SRAM brake rotors. You have Center Lock; this has a central lockring and is the norm on both the road and on many gravel paths. In addition you have 6-Bolt; this has six bolts and is widely used on MTBs.

The right SRAM brake set for every bike

The SRAM technologies only really come into their own when the entire system works together as one whole. A complete brake set often consists of the full combination of the brake lever, the hydraulic line and the brake caliper. A well-adjusted set ensures a direct power transfer without pressure loss.
You have different types of brake sets, which can all differ slightly from each other:

  • Standard brake sets: These are standalone braking systems, mainly used on mountain bikes. The brake lever here purely has the function of operating the brake.
  • Shift/Brake sets: With a road or gravel handlebar, the brake lever and the shifter are combined in one lever, such as with the SRAM Rival, Force or RED groupsets. These Shift/Brake sets do not only operate the hydraulic brakes, but also control the often wireless eTap/AXS shifting system. A well-functioning set is extra important here, because this is the control center of your handlebar.

Getting the maximum out of your brakes

Whether you choose a light Level setup on your XC mountain bike, a streamlined Paceline combination on your gravel bike, a powerful Code set for heavy mountain bike work, or an integrated Shift/Brake set for the road: SRAM brakes offer the right balance between stopping power and control for every sportive cyclist. By ensuring a well-fitting, high-quality brake set, you get the maximum out of every ride. At Woest, we have an extensive range of SRAM brakes, so you always have the right choice for your challenges.
